Mental Health Courses

Background

With the increasing prevalence of mental ill-health in our community and amongst the people using our Care services, Central will be offering two different mental health education courses over the coming months to equip our church family and give them the confidence to offer help.

The courses are not designed to make people mental health professionals or replace care services, but to educate everyone on how to help someone in a mental health crisis, before signposting them to professional services.

A 2.5-hour lecture-style Introduction to Mental Health course and a more advanced two-day interactive Scottish Mental Health First Aid course will be offered.

What is covered?

Both courses will help people to:

– Become aware of the key mental health issues in Scotland
– Understand what depression is and how it affects people
– Gain an awareness of the effects of trauma
– Guide people towards appropriate help

The two-day course also covers:

– Knowing how to ask about suicide
– Recognising and responding appropriately to anxiety and panic disorder
– Understanding and responding appropriately to people with psychosis
